|meta search engine (FIN-SEM-BIC)|
A search engine in the World Wide Web.
The meta search engine does not have a hit list itself, but passes on a search request to selected search engines and presents the hits delivered from there as a common hit list.
From the user's point of view, using a meta search engine is particularly effective since an individual request delivers the results of all connected search engines simultaneously. On the other hand, the possibilities to define complex search criteria are severely restricted with meta search engines due to the system. Prerequisite for the use of a meta search engine is the exact knowledge of the individual query syntax of every individual search engine, which the queries are passed onto.
